![]() Results showed that the nature of communication and relationship between migrant parents and left-behind children are dependent on: the characteristics of the parent and the child, the methods used in communication, the existing relationship before migration occurred, and the guardian’s role in the triangle relationship. Data was then analysed using thematic analysis. ![]() Experiences of left-behind children on migration were captured through the use of an interview guide which included questions pertaining to: (1) the methods used in communication, (2) the problems encountered in communication, (3) the content of the communication and (4) the parent-child relationship. Twenty-two (22) left-behind children were conveniently sampled to participate in focus group discussions conducted by the researchers. The family system’s theory was used as a framework in this study, to better explain the nature of communication and the relationship between migrant parents and left-behind children among transnational families. This study is qualitative in nature which sought to describe the nature of communication between migrant parents and left-behind children and to describe how their communication influenced their relationship and the balance of the family unit despite the physical separation and the distance. Results showed that: (1) The extent of exposure to political issues varied as to the positions, programs, and issues faced (2) The exposure to political issues taught the informants to be vigilant as legislators (3)People’s endorsement motivated the informants to secure an elective post in the government (4) The exposure to political issues challenged the informants to enter the political world (5) The informants have various measurements of political success (6) Name recall was one aspect considered by the informants which became contributory to the success in politics and (7) Other factors identified to be contributory were dominance of family name, leadership background and others. Qualitative means were used by the researcher in analyzing the data. The data were gathered through a digitally recorded in-depth voice interview by the researcher with the informants which was guided by an interview schedule. A descriptive type of research specifically, a case study was the method used by the researcher. The informants of the study were five purposively selected media men turned politicians. However, they learned a little of local history as part of the town’s culture since their experience focused more on the aesthetics of dancing. Finally, through their yearly participation, participants became culture learners. Also, the following were considered as factors for participation the school encouragement, participation and parent’s decision, friends’ participation, and the trainer’s skills and attitude towards training. The experiences revealed that participation was important because of the expectation of the kins and the community, and their personal interest in dancing. Using Groenewalds Five Steps of Explicitation Process, eight themes emerged as essence of their experiences. The results of this study provided valuable insights on the importance of participation, the factors affecting it and what is learned by the dance performers particularly in the context of local history and culture.
